Mareel is the UK s most northerly cinema & music venue located to the north of Lerwick town centre on edge of the historic Hay s Dock.
Designed for Shetland Arts Development Agency, the new 2980mA? venue is a high quality inclusive arts and cultural facility providing much needed performance and recording spaces to support the islands great tradition of music making, as well as two dedicated cinema spaces for the enjoyment of film for the Shetland community. The venue also includes facilities for the development of education programmes for students on the islands and acts as a platform to showcase Shetland s music, film and other related industries on an international stage.
The architectural response reflects the tradition of simple, robust forms, typical in such exposed locations and echoes the materiality of the fishing industry buildings dotted along the waterfront. The striking building sits directly on the stone quay wall drawing from the language of the Lodberries: traditional merchants houses and warehouses built right on the water s edge.
Inside the building the dramatic double height foyer and cafe bar thread between the offset auditoria acting as a buffer between these acoustically sensitive spaces. The foyer and caf bar are designed as a series of smaller spaces which different building users can occupy without disrupting each other.
In 2013 Mareel won the RIAS Award, the RIBA National Award, and was shortlisted for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.
