The mall ‘Boven het IJ’ in Amsterdam North, will be transformed into Central area. Amsterdam Noord (CAN).
The integration of a large building of residential, retail, and parking is the first phase of this transformation.
This building has the size of 5 football fields stacked on top of each other. That does not reflect to the scale
of the environment: the ‘Plan van Gool’, a sixties neighborhood with lots of green and low raised level
buildings. This building is therefore ,using an efficient parking solution, divided into four slabs, one to live in
and three to park in. Cuts between these slabs act as entrances for the housing and form bridges to the
other slabs. These cuts give a good orientation in the garage and take care of waste gases and daylighting,
whithout having to use any installations.
The entire building consists of bricks, in different techniques and colors, and in that way, has a warm and
durable exterior. The facade of the garage is a especially developed with a semi-transparent brick facade
system. The surprise shows itself at night: in collaboration with light artists, the facade is illuminated from
the interior. Then building transforms itself into a dynamic magical lantern.
